Computer crime and cyber security L 4 Copyright What is a creative work?
Computer crime and cyber security L 4 Copyright How long does copyright last? • Copyright lasts for the author’s lifetime plus 70 years after the author dies • However, if you record a performance of, say, a symphony by Mozart (who died in 1791), the performance itself is copyright
Computer crime and cyber security L 4 Copyright Examples of online copyright infringement • You make an MP 3 copy of a song because the CD you bought expressly gives you permission to do this. Then you put your MP 3 copy on the Internet using a filesharing network so that millions of other people can download it • You receive an email with a copy of a copyrighted song, and you forward this to all your friends • You pay a fee to join a file-sharing network that is not authorised to distribute copyrighted music. Then you download unauthorised copies of music you want
Computer crime and cyber security L 4 Copyright When is it OK to copy a music CD? • It’s OK to transfer a copy of a CD you have bought onto your computer hard drive or portable music player, so long as it is just for your personal use • It’s never OK to sell or make a profit from an unauthorised copy of copyright material
Computer crime and cyber security L 4 Copyright What’s the harm? • Music theft or “piracy” is stealing from all those in the music industry – the songwriters, recording artists, audio engineers, computer technicians, producers, publishers and others • It is estimated that the illegal downloading of films, TV programmes and music could mean the loss of 30, 000 British jobs
