Convergence in ICT

What is convergence? “the erosion of boundaries between previously separated ICT service network and business practices” (Singh & Raja, 2016). It is when digital media, telecommunication and computer technology come together to produce a single system. Convergence can be in three forms: service convergence (ICT in a single market to provide several communication services); network convergence (to facilitate interconnectivity); cooperate convergence (the merger, acquisition or collaboration of business to create a new business).

Examples of Convergence In ICT Camera + Phone + Software = Communication devices + Wireless networking + software = Business practices

Benefits of Convergence in ICT • • • Expanded access Greater competition Increase investment Lower cost Improve user experience

ICT in the classroom • Science – Living things • Using a whiteboard and power point • presentation to teach a science lesson on characteristics of living things. • ICT equipment being used are: laptop, projector, power point software, video clips, internet, the world wide web and the whiteboard. • Objective of the lesson: • students will learn the characteristics of living things; • work in groups to search for video clips which demonstrate the different characteristics and present it to the class. • Students will be introduce to internet search and interact the whiteboard.

ICT in the classroom • Mathematics – fractions • Using educational games to introduce a new topic and to reinforce lesson. • ICT equipment being used: Laptops, software to create the game – Objective of the lesson: • to evaluate student previous knowledge on fractions • students will use the game software to create their own game thus reinforcing their knowledge on fractions
