Project Overview Spectrum Health Radiology professionals are committed to providing safe and quality patient care for all healthcare consumers seeking the diagnostic testing and procedural services that we provide. Quality of care and patient safety provisions include: • An evidence-based clinical policy for safe administration of contrast. • An established protocol and resources available to assist staff in prompt recognition and treatment of potential contrast reactions.

Goals and Objectives 1. Perform an interdisciplinary team review of the current contrast reaction

Goals and Objectives 1. Perform an interdisciplinary team review of the current contrast reaction protocol utilizing ACR guidelines. 2. Develop a visual algorithm to post in each modality based on established contrast reaction protocol & ACR guidelines. 3. Present finished product to the Radiology Central Shared Leadership (RCSL)Committee.

Quality and Safety Culture Ø Quality Improvement Process Ø Yoder-Wise (2011) defines quality improvement as a “systematic review and improvement of interventions that improve quality of care through the prevention of errors”(p. 390). Ø National Patient Safety Goals ØImprovement of communication among caregivers. Ø Improve safety of using medications. (contrast dye is considered a medication at Spectrum Health) Ø Improvement of recognition and response to changes in a patient’s condition. (Yoder-Wise, 2011)

Project Process & Progress 1. Identify a project opportunity that would improve care quality & patient safety in the radiology department at Spectrum Health. 2. Identify and meet with project stakeholders. 3. Speak to the head chair of RCSL committee to get project presentation on the next meeting agenda. 4. Assemble the interdisciplinary project team and explain project purpose and goals.

Meet with project team to develop an algorithm. 8. Finalize algorithm and meet with team to review presentation for Central Shared Leadership meeting. 9. Present final project to Shared Leadership.
