Contour Line Drawing A contour is the edge of something. Contour Drawings use lines to show the edge of objects. The lines can also describe texture or pattern. Contour is commonly defined as the "outline of a figure or object. " There is a definite distinction between "contour and outline. " We think of an outline as a diagram or silhouette, flat and two dimensional. It is the sort of drawing you make when you place you hand flat on a piece of paper and trace around the fingers with a pencil.

Now for the Twist… Let’s Throw Some COLOR In The
The Breakdown Using your photo or a mirror (NOT your phone ) draw a continuous contour line drawing of yourself, once or multiple times until you take up the majority of the space on your paper. Sketch it out in pencil if you’d like, but go over in pen before moving on. Next, get creative with a combination of watercolor markers and water-soluble crayons/pastels. (Practice a little on scrap paper if you’ve never used these before. Lay the color down then simply take a waterloaded brush over the color to blend. )
Criteria Checklist Continuous Contour Line (Do NOT pick up your pencil/pen) Subject Matter: YOU (photo or mirror) Paper Space is Utilized (little to no white space) Color adds variety and interest to the piece; completes the work. Take ½ time remaining on drawing & the other ½ on adding color! GO!
