Continuing Professional Development (CPD) CPD is any learning that develops and maintains professional competence to enable a member to continue to perform their professional role.
Verifiable vs Unverifiable
What is verifiable CPD? Is a CPD learning activity that a third party is able to verify objectively. Examples of verifiable CPD • Learning that results in obtaining a certificate • Learning activities where attendance is taken • Learning that concludes with an exam • Learning activities that results in a presentation • Learning and research that results in a written report or publication
Where can I take verifiable CPD? • CPA Alberta courses; • CPA Canada webinars; • Organized employer-based-in-house training session; • Formal study, including e-learning courses leading to a designation, degree, certificate, or diploma.
Documenting Verifiable CPD Documentation should support your learning activity: • • • What - Describe the learning activity. Who - Identify the provider of the activity. How - Connect the member to the activity. When - Identify when the activity took place. Provide a basis for concluding that the number of reported hours is reasonable.
What is unverifiable learning? Learning activities which do not result in a product or for which no evidence exists are considered unverifiable. Examples of unverifiable hours: • On the job learning of a new software, systems, procedures or techniques for a professional role • Technical reading, self study of published materials • Casual reading of professional journals or magazines
In review: • Verifiable learning activities result in tangible evidence that you participated in the activity and a third party would be able to verify the evidence objectively. • Unverifiable learning activities do not result in tangible evidence.
