Why annotate? • Clearly identifies where important ideas and information are located. • Expresses the main ideas of the text. • Traces the development of ideas/arguments through the text. • Introduces a few of your thoughts and reaction while reading. • Gives you a deeper understanding of the text. Where do you annotate? Within the margins of what is being read.

6 Steps of Annotating 1. 2. 3. 4. Circle and define any unknown words. Summarize each section/stanza. Underline/highlight key phrases. Note word patterns, repetitions, point of view, or anything else that strikes you as confusing or important 5. Write down questions. 6. Determine an overall theme or the paper’s thesis.
