What is Constructivism? Kretchmar, J. (2019) described that constructivism is the branch of philosophy that analyzes the nature of knowledge an individual posses. He further explains that constructivism is a process where knowledge is build based on the experiences of an individual. Constructivism can be spilt into 2 main branches: • Cognitive constructivism which is based on Jean Piaget’s theory • Social constructivism supported by Lev Vygotsky’s research 2
Why is it important? • According to Piaget, all learning is motivated by a desire to maintain a state of equilibrium. (as cited by Prouix, 2006). • Hence, adopting constructivism learning is essential to maintain a balance between the existing knowledge and the newly acquired knowledge. • Constructivism is not just theory of teaching, but also a theory of learning. • Teachers can adopt constructivism learning approach to induce learning in students by creating a imbalance and promoting construction of new knowledge on their existing understanding. 3
What next? • With the understanding of constructivism, I am willing to build my new knowledge based on the knowledge that I have gained in the GCES program. • I believe constructivism is something that I can adopt not only to gain educational knowledge but also to acquire understanding about other concepts too. • I am in a new country and constructivism learning outlook can help me build new ideas and understandings.
