Construction Technology II Structural Steelwork Frames
What type of workers are required to erect structural steelwork frame especially for tallest building ? Trained workers Workers must be train by the qualified person. Qualified person is also the health and safety officer. Workers are required to carry two lanyards all the time to prevent falling down when one of the lanyard failed.
What type of workers are required to erect structural steelwork frame especially for tallest building ? Qualified person will train the workers on : 1. How to use the protection equipments. 2. Train the worker engaged in specific activities. 3. Provide training at ground level before work begins. 4. Procedure of using the equipments
List out TWO (2 ) types of steel section are available in the market. Support your answer with THREE ( 3 ) sketches of each sections. A. Cold Roll Formed Sections B. Hot Roll Formed Sections
Cold roll formed sections • More finished surface with closer tolerance. • Provides a smooth surface that are often oily to touch. • Harder and stronger. • Higher price because of additional processing. • Essentially hot rolled steel that has been through further processing • Once the hot rolled steel has cooled, it is rerolled at room temperature • To achieve more exact dimensions to suit a particular use or design and for better surface qualities.
Cold roll formed sections
Hot roll formed sections • Roll-passed a very high temperature which is around 1, 700 o. F ( above the recrystallisation temperature ) for most steels. • Making steel easier to form and resulting in products are easier to work with. • Steel shrinks slightly as it cools. (hot rolled steel is cooled after processing) • Hence there is less control over its final shape, making it less suitable for precision applications. • It is cheaper as it requires less processing.
Hot roll formed sections
Explain why the fire protection is required to apply for the steel structures. Please suggest TWO ( 2) suitable methods of fire protection. Why fire protection is required ? • Fire protection is required to limit internal spread of fire within the building. • For the building to resist collapse which applies to load bearing element • To resist fire penetration which applies to fire separating element • To resist transfer of heat (Thermal insulation) which applies to fire separating element.
Two suitable methods of fire protection Spray Coating • Cheapest method • Lightweight coating • Can last up to 4 hour or more depending on the coating thickness • A very fast process
Board Casing • Suitable for used in conjunction with wall and ceiling finishes. • The board must be securely fixed around the steel sections and joints between boards must be covered to ensure the steel section got the most out of its fire protection. • It has different type of material to suit the client needs.
Identify the benefits of using the structural steel frame to high rise building. • Light in Weight reducing the labor required and materials shipping cost thus further reduce project budgets • Durable superior in strength and it does not age or decay as quickly as other construction materials • Reduction in Construction Period steel parts are pre-fabricated at the factory or manufacturing plant
Identify the benefits of using the structural steel frame to high rise building. • Fire Resistance reducing the fire risk to a building and retarding the spread of a fire • Easy Fabrication In Different Sizes available in a variety of sizes and can be fabricated order
