Constructing a Two Way Table A two way
Constructing a Two Way Table A two way table is a way to display two sets of related data
Let’s say we asked a group of 30 boys & girls if they have a pet
First we would label the table, the rows could represent boy or girl
Boys Girls
Then we could label the columns has a pet/doesn’t have a pet Boys Girls
Has a pet Boys Girls Does not have a pet
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Boys Girls total Does not have a pet total
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Boys Girls total Does not have a pet total Total boys
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Does not have a pet total Boys Girls total Total girls
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Boys Girls total Total that Has a pet Does not have a pet total
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Does not have a pet Boys Girls total Total that does not have a pet total
Now we need to add in the totals boxes, there will 5 in this case Has a pet Does not have a pet total Boys Girls total Total boys+girls (also total of pets + no pets)
Now we need to add some info: Let’s say out of the 32, 18 were girls. How can we figure out how many were boys? Has a pet Has no pet Total Boys Girls Total 18 32
Has a pet Has no pet Total Boys Total - girls = boys Girls 18 Total 32 -18 = 14 32
More info: 23 students had pets, 10 of them were girls, we can now fill in the whole chart: Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 14 Girls 10 18 Total 23 32
Has a pet Has no pet Boys Girls Total 14 10 Total girls - girls with pet: 18 18 -10 = 8 Total 23 32
Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total - girls = boys 23 - 10 = 13 Girls 10 Total 23 Total 14 8 18 32
Has a pet Boys 13 Girls 10 Total 23 Has no pet Total boys - has pet 14 -13 = 1 Have no pet 14 8 18 32
Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 Can do 8+1 or 32 -23 to find # 9 32 14
Completed table Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 9 32 14
***Some things to note: *** Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 9 32 14
These numbers can be found in different order than what I have shown, but the answers will be the same Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 9 32 14
The columns totals and row totals both add to the same number Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 9 32 14
The rows and columns can also be reversed Boys Girls total 23 Has a pet 13 10 Does not have a pet 1 8 9 14 18 32 total
Look for clue words when answering questions, ex “total girls” look in row that represents girls “Total that has a pet” look at the column that represents has a pet Has a pet Boys Has no pet Total 13 1 Girls 10 8 18 Total 23 9 32 14 Girls that have a pet, look at the box where girls and has a pet overlap
