WHAT IS A CONJUNCTION? • Conjunctions are words that join parts of sentences or even entire sentences. They are connecting words such as “and”, “or/either, ” “nor/neither, ” “but”.
Y = AND • Example: • Marc Anthony y Enrique Iglesias cantan en español.
Y=AND • When “y” goes before a word that begins with “i” or “hi”, then it changes to an “e” to differentiate the sound • Hablo español e inglés=I speak Spanish and English
O= OR, EITHER • Example: • Normalmente, duermo ocho o nueve horas.
O=OR, EITHER • When “o” goes before a word that begins with “o” or “ho”, then it changes to an “u” to differentiate the sound • ¿Vas a Nueva York u Orlando? =Are you going to New York or Orlando?
NI= NOR, NEITHER • Example”: • No queremos ni pizza ni tamales. • Note: yes, this is a double negative! In Spanish, unlike English, double negatives are acceptable.
PERO= BUT • Example: • José pierde mucho, pero yo gano frecuentamente.
