Congressman Ruben Gallego is the son of Hispanic immigrants, a veteran, and a community leader. He was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Harvard University with a degree in International Relations. He later joined the Marine Corps, serving in Iraq with the well-known combat unit Lima 3/25. Congressman Gallego has always been motivated by the same thing – a real appreciation of what families in Arizona are going through and a desire to help improve their lives. Congressman Gallego currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee and Natural Resources Committee.
Arizona’s 7 th Congressional District • Arizona’s Seventh Congressional District is centered around the City of Phoenix and is fully contained within Maricopa County. The district includes Downtown, Central, West and South Phoenix, as well as Tolleson, Guadalupe and a part of Glendale. • Some of Phoenix’s most recognizable landmarks are located within the seventh district, including the State Capitol, South Mountain, Sky Harbor Airport, US Airways Arena and Chase Field, making the district home to both the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks. • The district is the most diverse in Arizona. Nearly 64% of the residents of District 7 are Hispanic and just shy of 10% are African American. Additionally, 25, 000 military veterans and many refugee communities call the 7 th District home. • Ruben previously represented large portions of the district, in the state House of Representatives. Prior to that, he had served a significant part of the district as Chief of Staff for Councilman Michael Nowakowski.
District Boundaries
DC Office Policy-specific work (e. g. , developing legislation) The Chief of Staff manages both DC and District office for the Member of Congress. The Legislative Director (LD)—supervises the Legislative Assistants (LA) who specialize in specific policy areas. The LAs are responsible for keeping abreast of major issues and all legislation within their portfolios and providing advice to the LD, Chief of Staff, and member on votes and how these issues may impact the member’s constituents. A Legislative Correspondent is responsible for responding to constituent letters, and manages DC interns. The Communications Director is responsible for all social media and press releases or inquiries. The Scheduler handles the Member’s commitments in DC and liaises with the District office to keep all appointments up to date.
District Office: Constituent-specific work (e. g. , working with constituents, organizations and community leaders) is the responsibility of the district office. The District Director manages the District office, supervises district staff and is responsible for recommendations to the Member and Chief of Staff. The Outreach Director manages the Congressman’s schedule, ensures the office and the Congressmen are represented at community events and manages the Advisory Councils. They work with the Field Representatives, who attend community meetings and run additional Councils. The Intergovernmental Affairs Director coordinates with all government officials and elected leaders in the community on issues that require multi-sector solutions. They are responsible for a number of special projects. The Constituent Services Director supervises a team of Caseworkers, who can intervene with their assigned federal agencies on behalf of constituents. The Constituent Services team works closely with federal agencies, non-profits and service providers. The Staff Assistant is responsible for managing the front desk and office operations, while still managing a case load.
