What is conflict? • A problematic situation where the concerns or interests of two or more parties appear incompatible
Why does it exist in groups? • Members see needs differently because of different values, goals, and perceptions
What happens when it is ignored? • Communication breaks down • Animosities develop • Group function is impaired
Conflict can be healthy… • As it allows us to explore our differences • People can be stimulated to creativity • Alternatives are considered • Better ideas generated • Authentic relationships develop
Conflict is INEVITABLE… • Of all the things we deal with as leaders, conflict is among the most difficult! • Most problems are caused by the way people communicate and choose to handle conflict
Why is it important to resolve it? • Ignoring conflict doesn’t make it go away! • As a leader, you can’t afford to be in combat with people whose help you want! • They need to feel like “you are all in it together!
