CONFLICT RESOLUTION GROUP ASSIGNMENT #1 For the week of March 30 -April 3
Instructions It is important to remember that we communicate using more than just our words! ◦ Please watch the following video ◦ Talking twin babies ◦ These babies, were having a conversation! But without real words! How is that possible? ◦ ◦ They took turns speaking Their tone of voice changed as they “talked” Body language Facial expressions
Video Reflection ◦ Think about…. ◦ How do you think each of them felt? ◦ Did their feelings change throughout their conversation? ◦ What might they have been talking about if they could use real words?
Application to Conflict Resolution ◦ “It’s not about what you say, its about how you say it” ◦ My dad used to tell me this a lot! ◦ When we are trying to work out a problem with somebody, we need to remember that we are communicating with them by more than just what we say! ◦ Make sure you are calm enough to control your body language, tone, and facial expression, as well as your words! ◦ If you do these things, you will have more success in solving problems with other people!
To Do ◦ Look up the Merriam-Webster definition of communication. ◦ If you have enough people at your house to play with, try this…. ◦ You can play the game of telephone in 2 different ways. ◦ Option 1: play it like normal, passing a message down the line by whispering in each other’s ears. See if you get the same message when it gets to the last person! ◦ This is verbal communication. ◦ Option 2: pass a message down the line using only body language, and facial expressions- a lot like a game of charades. All players must stand facing the same direction. They should be looking at the back of the person in front of them. The person at the back of the line goes first. They tap the person in front of them on the shoulder to signal that they should turn around and watch. Player 1 mimes a message to them. Player 2 then taps the person in front of them, and sends the message on. The person at the end of the line will show the whole group what message they received! ◦ This is non-verbal communication.
