Confirmed in the Church Confirmed in Spirit 8 th Grade Religion Chapter 6

Put on Love Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3: 12 -17

The Letter to the Colossians describes many of the good things God the Father has done for us through Jesus. ØIn Jesus, we have become members of a community … “one body” ØOur community is to live in peace and thanksgiving ØWe have the seven sacraments which help us “wear” our faith ØBaptism – become members of Christ’s Church, his disciples ØEucharist – we share in the very life of Jesus and receive him ØReconciliation – our sins are forgiven; we find pardon and peace

Many, Yet One The Church is the instrument that makes the communion between God and people possible. When we come together to celebrate Eucharist: v. United with the Church throughout the world, the angels, and saints v. We participate in our worship together as friends v. Belong to the Body of Christ, the Church. v. Offer together the sacrifice of Calvary and enter into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus’ life, Death, and Resurrection

Holy Spirit Alive!! When the Spirit descended on the disciples at Pentecost, they proclaimed that Jesus was alive in the world. He had risen! At Mass, the Holy Spirit speaks through the Scriptures. The Spirit of Jesus brings us closer to him and works in the community that is gathered to receive him in the Eucharist.

Celebration of the Mass The Mass has two main parts: Liturgy of the Word Liturgy of the Eucharist

Liturgy of the Word ØWe are united with other members of God’s family. ØWe hear God’s stories from the Old Testament, the letters (epistles), and from our Gospels: First Reading – Old Testament Second Reading – Letter in the New Testament Gospel – From Matthew, Mark, Luke or John in the New Testament

Liturgy of the Eucharist In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we are united with Jesus and his sacrifice. We receive the Body and Blood of Christ under the appearance of bread and wine. ØWhen we share in Eucharist, we are one with all who belong Ø Church on earth Ø Saints in Heaven Ø Souls in Purgatory ØWe are nourished to “live out” the Word of God that we have heard proclaimed. ØWe unite our sacrifices to the sacrifice of Jesus ØPray for the needs of the Church and the world

Mortal Sin Mortal sin breaks our relationship with God and others. This must be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We commit a mortal sin when: § We do something that is seriously wrong § We know it is seriously wrong § We freely and willingly choose to do it

Venial Sin Venial sin is a less serious offense that weakens our relationship with God and others. When we are repentant, we can be forgiven through any of these: § Prayer (Act of Contrition) § A good action or deed offered as a sacrifice § Receiving Holy Communion § Sacrament of Reconciliation

Sacrament of Reconciliation In the Sacrament of Reconciliation we encounter Jesus and ask him to forgive our sins through the ministry of the priest. The priest represents Jesus and the forgiving community. When we hear his word of absolution, our sins are forgiven. The priest is bound by the seal of confession never to reveal what anyone confesses.

The Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation increases the love and unity of the Church. When we participate in the Eucharist, we strengthen our friendships with Jesus. When we are wounded by sin, Christ heals us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation
