WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE?
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 1? A Confined Space is a space that meets all of the following criteria: 1. Is large enough and configured in a way that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work. 2. Has a limited or restricted means of entry or exit. 3. Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. Confined spaces are not usually labeled, so it is important to be able to identify confined spaces.
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 2? 1. IS LARGE ENOUGH AND CONFIGURED IN A WAY THAT AN EMPLOYEE CAN BODILY ENTER AND PERFORM ASSIGNED WORK. • The space must be large enough that it would be able to accommodate a small adult. (About 4’ 11” tall) • Smaller spaces that permit only partial bodily entry (arm, head, etc. ) are not considered confined spaces. However, they may contain similar hazards.
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 3? 2. HAS A LIMITED OR RESTRICTED MEANS OF ENTRY OR EXIT. Examples of restricted means of entry/exit are: • Hatches, manholes, crawlspaces, or entries that require climbing a ladder or steep stairway. • Enclosed spaces where the entrant would have to travel a long distance to get to the means of exit • Standard doorways if entrants are required to stoop or step over obstacles to enter the doorway.
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 4? 3. IS NOT DESIGNED FOR CONTINUOUS EMPLOYEE OCCUPANCY. The Space is not designed to be occupied by a person for extended periods of time. The space likely lacks: • Proper ventilation • Lighting
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 5? EXAMPLES OF CONFINED SPACES ON CAMPUS • Air Intakes • Air Handlers
WHAT IS A CONFINED SPACE 6? EXAMPLES OF CONFINED SPACES ON CAMPUS • Electric Vaults • Tunnels
WHAT IS A PERMIT REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE?
WHAT IS A PERMIT REQUIRED SPACE 1? A Permit Required Confined space is a confined space that contains any of the following Hazards: 1. Contains or has a potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere. 2. Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant. (Grain silos, storage tanks, etc. ) 3. Has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section. (Hoppers, Dust Collectors, etc. ) 4. Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard. (Hazards that would prevent a entrant from leaving the space without assistance)
WHAT IS A PERMIT REQUIRED SPACE 2? EXAMPLES OF PERMIT REQUIRED CONFINED SPACES ON CAMPUS • • Sump Pits Dust Collection Units Boiler Ash Hoppers
WHAT IS A PERMIT REQUIRED SPACE 3? EXAMPLES OF PERMIT REQUIRED CONFINED SPACES ON CAMPUS • Fountain Pits • Storage Tanks
ENTERING CONFINED SPACES
ENTERING CONFINED SPACES 1 CONFINED SPACES ARE DYNAMIC AREAS. A non-permit required space can become a permit required space based on the type of work being performed in the space. • Atmospheric Hazards may develop if workers are welding, plasma cutting, painting, cleaning with solvents, etc. • Mechanical or Electrical Hazards may be present if equipment is being serviced in the space. • Heat Stress Hazards may develop based on the time of year or weather.
ENTERING CONFINED SPACES 2 NO ONE IS PERMITTED TO ENTER A CONFINED SPACE WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING • This awareness training does not qualify you to enter a confined space. • Confined space entry training is required for anyone whose job duties require them to enter a confined space. • Entry Training covers how to assess and classify a space as well as the proper procedures for entering a permit required confined space. • Training is conducted by the REM department. • Training can be performed for groups or departments. • Workers who have completed initial training are encouraged to complete refresher training each year. If your job requires you to enter a confined space, please contact REM at 49 -46371 to schedule Confined Space Entry Training.
