What is a Confined Space? 1. Is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work; And 2. Has limited or restricted means for entry or exit; And 3. Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy
Permit Required Confined Space • A confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics: – Hazardous atmosphere (or potential) – Engulfment potential – Internal Configuration that could trap or asphyxiate entrant – Other recognized serious safety/health hazard
Special Considerations for Confined Space • Fall Protection required > 5 feet • Permit required to be kept for 1 year after entry • Each member of the rescue service shall practice making permit space rescues at least once every 12 months, by means of simulated rescue operations in which they remove dummies, manikins, or actual person from the actual permit space or from representative permit spaces • Authorized entrant shall use a chest or full body harness, with a retrieval line. The other end of the retrieval line shall be attached to a mechanical device or fixed point outside the permit space in such a manner that rescue can begin as soon as the rescuer becomes aware that rescue is needed
Atmospheric Monitoring • Hazardous Atmosphere: – An atmosphere that may expose employees to the risk of death, incapacitation, impairment of ability to self-rescue, injury, or acute illness from one or more of the following: • Flammable gas, vapor mist > 10 % of lower flammable limit • Concentration of dust in which dust obscures vision at 5 feet • Oxygen content <19. 5% or >23. 5% • Any other atmospheric condition that is immediately dangerous to life or health
Practical Application • • Location of Drill Order of Arrival Radio Channels Use your department’s permit and SOP’s
