UK & Ireland Specialization since 1987 in UK, and 1995 in Ireland l Training period of 4 years l – Accepted 2 years in family medicine, oncology, hematology, pediatric or infectious diseases – Minimum of 2 mandatory years in PC specialized services – Final examination at the end of the training period – Research experience is encouraged and supported and can count for up to a year of HMT l Certification: Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board & Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training

Sub-specialization in Europe POLAND (1999) – Palliative Medicine as a medical specialty was introduced in 1999. It has a second level status which means that it is available only for those physician who are already specialist in other clinical disciplines. It takes two years to complete specialty training ROMANIA (2000) – There is recognition of PC as a medical subspecialty since 2000 by an order of Ministry of Health. Accreditation in progress SPAIN – The Spanish Society of PC and the National Commission on Medical Specialization are working on an “Specific Capacitation Area in Palliative Medicine” with access from several previous specializations NORDIC COUNTRIES: DENMARK, FINLAND, SWEEDEN, NORWAY, ISLAND – Nordic Specialist Course in Palliative Medicine – Two year theoretical training – Are Working with the Ministry of Health in each country looking for accreditation (more advanced in Norway and Sweden)
