Conducting a Confirmation Test Upon successfully completing this unit, the students will be able to: Explain and demonstrate the procedures for conducting a confirmation test.

When should confirmation tests be conducted? Confirmation tests are conducted ONLY when a screening

When should confirmation tests be conducted? Confirmation tests are conducted ONLY when a screening test indicates a positive result. If a screening test result is negative, do not test further. Why? Consider this example: A positive test cutoff for an employer is 0. 020, and The screening test on the employee indicates 0. 019 and the technician decides to conduct a confirmation test anyway The confirmation test result reads 0. 020 That employer might rely on the confirmation test result (which always takes precedence over the screening test result), but the employee may have grounds to fight the employer’s decision. The employee may ask if the technician “had it out for him? ” apparently trying to get the result to read positive despite a negative screening.

Completed Example Positive Confirmation Test Make sure that you are affixing all three printout copies (6 total in this case) to all three copies of the form. In this case, the confirmation test result was positive and the employee signed Step 4. If the Screening was positive and the confirmation was negative, the confirmation test is the one that must be used by the employer and the employee would not sign Step 4.
