Conditional Relative Frequency Tables SUMMARIZE CATEGORICAL DATA
Here is a marginal frequency table we will use as an example for calculations (same data used as from lesson 2 joint relative distributions so you can compare the similarities and differences)
Conditional Relative Frequency: Shows the ratio or percent of occurrences of a category compared to the total of that category Ø ratio of the joint frequency and related marginal frequency Ø NOT compared to grand total Calculate Conditional Frequency by dividing each cell total by its Conditional Relative Frequency Table corresponding row total. Set up fraction and divide Cell total Row total
Comparing Relative Frequencies and Conditional Relative Frequencies Conditional Relative Frequency Tables can be used to analysis data within specific groups. Relative Frequencies analyze data compared to all the people surveyed. Conditional: Of the Ages 8 and Younger group, only 3. 3% preferred dramas. That does not mean 3. 3% of all the people are kids under 8 who like drama. That would be. 8% Conditional: Of the Ages 9 -16 group, 52. 5% preferred comedies. Again that doesn’t mean more than half the people surveyed are 9 -16 who like comedies. That would be 17. 5% Marginal Relative Frequency Table Conditional Relative Frequency Table
Sometimes the table are created in the other orientation and values are compared to the column totals, not the row totals. -still not the grand total however That’s ok You just are comparing the cell value to the column total not the row total. Always pay close attention to the denominator to decide which comparison is being made Conditional: Here the data shows out of which type of cookie, what percent of people pair it with which milk.
Conditional Relative Frequency Example: These are the types of questions that can be answered from conditional frequency tables. What percent of males prefer Batman? 40/100 = 40% What percent of females prefer Superman? 15/100 = 15% What percent of the males surveyed prefer Wonder Woman? 25/100 = 25% A question you cannot answer from this table is, “What percent of the total people surveyed were women who liked Wonder Woman? ” The answer of 62% is not correct. That is the percent of JUST the women who like Wonder Woman, not all people who are women and like ww
