Goal: To finalize body paragraphs �RIGHT NOW: �Those who signed up for Small Group Mini on Friday, will meet in the back with their drafts after the Benchmark lesson �Those who are not signed-up for Small Group Mini can sign Help Board with the time/topic. If I do not get to you, I will email with you. �During Small Group Mini, all students should review essay, start writing next body paragraph.
What is a concession? �A concession is acknowledging that there is another side. �Why do it? �It helps strengthen your argument and should be in every argument essay you write. �What does it look like? �Since my thesis example stated the American Dream is a myth, my concession has to acknowledge that it may actually exist for some people. �You can use one of the articles to help you write a concession paragraph
What is a refutation? � A refutation is where you prove the counter- arguments wrong or, at the very least, explain why you do not agree with it. � Why do it? � You have to bring your essay back to your point…your argument… a concession should be immediately followed by a refutation. It usually exists within the same paragraph. � What does it look like when combined with a concession? �For some the American Dream is a reality. Some people are able to come to America, work hard and become wealthy. If you look at Horatio Alger, he was a sickly little boy who went on to write countless stories. Millions of young children read his stories and believed in his characters. (Insert quote) (insert analysis) However, he was only professionally successful. No records indicate he ever made millions off his stories.

Go for it. You may decide to put your concession and refutation in the middle of your essay at body 2. . perfectly fine. Make sure your essay makes sense and flows well.
