HEALTH • WHO definition of health: – Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely an absence of a disease or infirmity. • Concepts of health – 1. Biomedical concept – 2. Ecological concept – 3. Psychological concept – 4. Holistic concept
Dimensions of Health
Positive health • Harmonious balance of well-being with environment • Perfect functioning of the body and mind • Relative concept – as perfect positive health is difficult to achieve
Well-being • Has objective and subjective components – Objective – “standard of living” – Subjective – “quality of life”
Standard of living • Scale to measure the expenditure, goods consumed, services enjoyed, education and occupation etc. • Includes: – Income, occupation, housing, sanitation, nutrition, education, recreation
Level of Living • Apart from the components in the Standard of living, it includes: – Social security – Human rights
Quality of life • Subjective component • Well-being as “perceived” by the individual or groups
PQLI • Composite index measure the well-being • Consolidates THREE indicators: – Life expectancy at age one – Literacy rate – Infant mortality rate • Does not take into consideration – Per capita GNP • Values range from 0 -100
Human Development Index • Three indicators: – Longevity (life expectancy at birth) – Knowledge (years of schooling) – Income (in purchasing power parity in US dollars) • Values range from 0 – 1 • India – 0. 586 • More than India – Norway, Australia, U. K • Less than India – Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kenya, Burma, Bhutan
