COMPUTING INVENTIONS THAT SOLVED PROBLEMS…
Invention – TELEPHONE First inventor to come up with the idea was Antonio Meucci in 1849. Alexander Bell’s Bell – maker of the telephone in 1876. first words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you. ”
Invention – Personal Computers Designed by British mathematician Charles Babbage between 1833 and 1871. Before Babbage came along, a "computer" was a person, someone who literally sat around all day, adding and subtracting numbers and entering the results into tables.
Invention – Internet In the 1960 s the U. S. government, businesses, and colleges worked together to make a system that would let computers across the United States share information. They created an early form of the Internet called ARPANET in 1969.
Invention – Home Television The world’s first electronic television was created by a 21 year old inventor named Philo Taylor Farnsworth. He lived in a house without electricity until he was age 14. Starting in high school, he began to think of a system that could capture moving images, transform those images into code, then move those images along radio waves to different devices.
Invention – Camera Although designs existed earlier, it wasn't until the 1800 s that practical cameras were developed. The ‘Kodak’ camera was developed by George Eastman and went on sale in 1888, pioneering the use of photographic film. It was simple box camera with a single shutter speed and fixed focus lens
Invention – Microwave Percy Spencer invented the microwave and his invention was an accident! Spencer worked for a company developing microwave radar transmitters during World War II. In 1945, he noticed that a candy bar he had in his pocket was starting to melt. The microwaves from the radar set he was working on were cooking it. He created the first working microwave, and the first food he cooked in it was popcorn.
Invention – Home Gaming Systems Ralph Baer began to investigate how to play games on a television and between 1967 and 1969. This result was the “Brown Box, ” a prototype for the first multiplayer, multiprogram video game system.
Invention – ATM While taking a soak, inventor John Shepherd-Barron devised what is hailed as the world's first automatic teller machine. He It pitched the device to the British bank Barclays. accepted immediately, and the first model was built and installed in London in 1967.
Invention – GPS The GPS project was launched in the United States in 1973. The US Department of Defence developed the system, which originally used 24 satellites. It was initially developed for use by the United States military and became fully operational in 1995.
To invent a new piece of technology that can be used to solve a problem in the 21 st century. To begin with, you must think of a problem that people may come across that something needs inventing for to fix. You will draw up a plan of what it will look like, detailing: what it will do, how it will work and how it will be made. You will then present your plan to the rest of the class.
