Computer Systems It is a collection of entities (hardware, software and Year 7: Unit 1 liveware) that are designed to receive, process, manage What is a Computer System? and present information in a meaningful format. Peripherals Input devices for specific needs In addition to standard computer equipment there is a range of special electronic equipment designed to be used by people with a visual impairment. This includes purpose made portable Braille computers and Braille input and output devices for standard computers. Braille keyboard – raised patterns are added to each key Purpose of the Computer: To perform calculations, store information, retrieve data and process information. Function of the Computer: The four basic functions of a computer are: input, storage, processing, and output. Data is entered into computer using Input Devices. Data or Instructions are stored in the computer in its memory and processed or uses them as and when required. Data is processed and converted into useful information. Output is generated as per format. Input devices also have to be adapted for those with specific needs. For example, motor impairment can affect a user’s ability to operate input devices. Solutions include: • Eye-Typer – a camera that tracks the focus of the user’s eyes to determine the actions they need to perform. • Voice Input – commands are spoken into a microphone that trigger actions to be performed by the computer. Output devices for specific needs Technology can be invaluable for people with impairments, both as a tool for learning and communication and for providing visual stimulation. Standard output devices are not necessarily suitable for use by everyone. Users with impairments may not be able to use output devices as intended. For example, visual impairment can affect a user’s ability to view information on a display. Solutions include • Screen Readers – these identify what is happening on the display and produce an audio description • Magnifiers – these make the display larger so that text and images can be read more easily Impairments Visual Motor
Computer Systems Challenge Year 7: Unit 1 What are Sensors? Sensors are devices designed to measure some physical quantity in its environment. The Role of Sensors are used to measure physical quantities such as temperature, light, pressure, sound, and humidity. They send signals to the processor. For example: a security alarm system may have an infrared sensor which sends a signal when the beam is broken a heat sensitive sensor in the corner of a room may detect the presence of a person temperature sensors could be used to control the heating in a large building magnetic sensors are used to detect metal and can be placed in roads to monitor traffic flow
