The History • The first university in Granada was founded by the Moorish Sultan Yusuf the First in 1349 • The modern university owes its origins to the initiative of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V who founded it in 1531 • At this time the “general studies” were restricted to Logic, Philosophy, Canonic Law, Grammar and Cases of Conscience • Today the University offers about 45 major and 5 engineering degrees; and has 60, 000 students, more than 2, 000 foreign visitors, 3, 000 teachers and 1, 500 administrative staff • It become the major Spanish university in terms of the number of Socrates/Erasmus students which it accepts

The geographical location The province of Granada can claim to have the most diverse climate in Spain Its coast is subtropical, whilst inland the mountains rise to the peaks of the Iberian peninsula, >3, 000 mts Granada has a Mediterranean mountain climate: hot and dry in summer, and cold and dry in winter, with cool, wet blustery weather in spring and autumn

The founder Charles of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V was the son of Philip of Bugarny and Joanne of Spain and inherited the thrones of Habsburg, the Netherlands and Spain He defeated King Francis I of France, ordered the plundering of Rome and sent the Pope to prison He also destroyed the Turk army and raised the siege of Vienna It was thanks to his initiative, that the University of Granada was created in 1531

The University The emblematic building of the University is called the “Hospital Real”, since this was what it effectively was in ancient times Nowadays, the Rector’s department and administrative heads have their offices here It is also the first place that foreign students should visit when they arrive to enrol officially at the University

The Hospital Real The Hospital’s wards were built to give onto four courtyards The architects made a wise decision!. . . , since the University staff can enjoy the daylight and the quietness all through their working day, as could the patients in former times

The Engineering School This building has housed the Computing and Computer Science academic studies course since 1993.

The Computer Sciences Academic Studies At present, the Engineering School awards two degrees in Computing and a degree in Computer Science The School’s graduates may obtain a diploma (219 credits) or receive a degree in Engineering (369 credits) upon successful completion one of the curricula (1 credit/ 10 class hours)

Practical classroom facilities The teaching is aimed at providing the students with a solid background in Computer Science Attendance of formal lectures is accompanied by an adequate proportion of practical work carried out in the laboratories and through projects which are personally directed by the faculty staff

Study Programmes The new curricula provide for a “cyclical system” of either three academic years: -Diploma in Computing for Management and Business Administration, -Diploma in System Programming and Administration of Computer Systems, or five: -Degree in Computer Sciences Engineering

Diploma in Computing for Management and Business Administration • First year subjects: Mathematics, Logic, Basic Programming, Data Structures, Electronics • Second year: Data Bases, Software Engineering, Operating Systems, Algorithms, Computer Networks • Final year: Accounting, Business Administration and plenty of room to choose among elective courses!
