Compound Light Microscope Parts and functions
EYEPIECE (Ocular) (A) Contains a magnifying lens you look through
REVOLVING NOSEPIECE (B) Holds the high and low power objective lenses Can be rotated to change lenses
OBJECTIVE LENSES (C) Lowest power. Scanning- 4 x. Used first when focusing a slide Medium POWERmagnifies 10 times (10 x) HIGH POWERmagnifies 40 times (40 x)
Total Magnification Eyepiece x objective lens Example 10 x X 4 x = 40 x Eypiece Obj. Lens Total Magnificati on 10 x 4 x 40 x 10 x 100 x 40 x 1000 x
What happens as the power of magnification increases? Increases the size Decreases the field of view
STAGE CLIPS (D) holds the microscope slide in place
STAGE (E) supports the microscope slide being viewed
Aperature (ADD TO DIAGRAM) Hole in the stage that lets the light pass through
LIGHT SOURCE (F) Allows light to reflect upward through the diaphragm, the specimen and lenses
BASE (G) Provides support for the microscope
DIAPHRAGM (H) Regulates the amount of light entering the microscope
FINE ADJUSTMENT (I) sharpens the image under high and low power moves the stage only slightly
COARSE ADJUSTMENT (J) Focuses the image under low power moves the stage up and down Use first
ARM (K ) supports the body tube also used to carry the microscope
BODY TUBE (ADD) connects the eyepiece to the revolving nosepiece and maintains the correct distance between the two lenses
Use of the Microscope Always carry with two hands Place with arm toward you and stage away
Use of the Microscope Adjust Diaphragm Use scanning power first Focus first with coarse adjustment Sharpen with Fine adjustment
Use of the Microscope Switch to high power USE ONLY THE FINE ADJUSTMENT!
