COMPOSITION STYLES PRINCIPLES ELEMENTS Handout 1: Essential Concepts of Photography Space: Positive or negative, can be crowded or open. Gives 3 -D feel. Line: Directs the eye through the image. Can be straight, zig zag, Curvy, diagonal Color: Makes impact and enhances appeal Shape/Form: Geometric or organic. Creates space or substance Size/Scale: Extreme sizes. Can be very small or very large to add interest Texture: Surface feel, adds interest. Smooth, rough, sticky Focal Point: The main object of interest Rhythm: Uses repetition to create flowing patterns Balance: Adds stability with a feeling of equivalent weight Contrast: Opposing textures, shapes, or colors Repetition: Repeating elements guide the eyes and adds interest Movement: Shows excitement and action Alignment: Methodical placement of objects, incites feeling of order Proximity: The closeness of objects, incites emotion Unity: The parts equate to a whole. Creates a sense of wholeness Rule of Thirds: Divide image into thirds and place object offcenter Leading Lines: Leads the eyes, defines depth Diagonal Lines: Guides the viewer’s eyes.
