Complete Sentences A complete sentence must have two parts. • A subject • A predicate Without both parts, it is a fragment, and not a complete sentence.
Subject The subject tells you who or what is performing the verb. The subject typically comes before the verb in a sentence. When a sentence has two or more subjects in it, this is called a compound subject. Subject – He plays tennis after school. Compound subject – Jake and Amina play tennis after school.
Predicate The predicate tells us something about the subject; usually what the subject is doing or what is happening to it. The predicate must include a verb which explains what the subject is doing. A compound predicate is when a sentence tells us two or more things about the same subject. Predicate – Jake and Amina play tennis after school. Compound predicate – Jake and Amina play tennis after school and eat ice cream. Even though the compound predicate contains two elements (Jake and Amina), they are classed as one subject.

Verbs and Linking Verbs You can identify the two parts of a complete sentence by finding the verb or the linking verb in the sentence. Verbs can be action words, e. g. dancing, to think or said. They can also show a state of being, e. g. is, am, was or were. Every sentence needs to include a verb. Kelly walks to school. A linking verb does not describe the action, but it connects more information about the subject to the predicate. Zayan is tall.
