Why is it important to some people to have an alternative other than traditional medicine?
CAM u. Is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered to be part of conventional medicine.
Complementary medicine u. Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine u. Example: aromatherapy to lessen a patient’s discomfort following surgery
Alternative Medicine u. Used in place of conventional medicine u. Example: Using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a conventional doctor
Integrative medicine u. Combines treatments from conventional medicine and CAM for which there is evidence of safety and effectiveness u. Also called : integrated medicine
Types of complementary and alternative medicine
Whole medical systems u. Built upon complete systems of theory and practice u. Often systems evolved apart from and earlier than the conventional medical approach used in the United States u Homeopathic medicine u Naturopathic medicine u Traditional Chinese medicine u Ayurveda
Whole Medical system examples: u. Homeopathic u Belief medicine that the body has the ability to heal itself u. Naturopathic medicine u Emphasizes the prevention and self-healing process through use of natural therapies u. Traditional Chinese medicine u Based on tradition of ancient Chinese medical practices including concepts such as yin-yang u. Ayurveda u 5, 000 year old system of natural healing from the country of India

Energy Therapies

Biofield therapies u Biofield therapies: intended to affect energy fields that purportedly surround and penetrate the human body u Existence of such fields has not been scientifically proven u Some forms of energy therapy manipulate biofields by applying pressure and /or manipulating the body by placing the hands in, or through, these fields u Examples: gi gong, reiki, and therapeutic touch
