Reflection Competency 001 The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. One of my duties was teacher and student appreciation. I was given a budget to provide teachers and students with various incentives. I solicited the opinions of team leaders as well as the principal advisory board. I learned to consider all areas that budget can be used. Its good to leave a cushion when dealing with budget money. Competency 001

Competency 002 The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources to promote student success. Reflection One of the duties assigned to me was to call parents to inform them of scheduled D-halls and ISS days due to tardies to class. I also scheduled conferences for students who were truant and skipping class. To help reduce the number of infractions I was visible in the hallway to encourage students to get to class on time. I learned not to be surprised by the different responses I get from parents. I learned some parents will get involved and show genuine concern about their child following school rules, and other parents don’t want to be bothered. Competency 002

Competency 003 The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal manner. Reflection I have learned the importance of being fair and ethical. I’ve seen parents take their concerns to the school board regarding decisions made by administrators. I’ve learned from the mistakes of others. Competency 003

Competency 004 The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student performance. Reflection I have had limited experience with curriculum. I worked with a curriculum specialist to broaden my knowledge. However, I have become involved with EOC administrative duties. I assisted in the testing room, as well as worked on organizing Saturday EOC tutorials. I learned that there are many small details that need to be considered during testing time. I learned the testing tubs have to be double checked and verified to ensure proctors have everything they need on testing day. Competency 004

Competency 005 The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Reflection Our principal’s vision is to empower the faculty and staff with all the tools needed to assist in the success of all students. Through this vision we are able to grow as a campus. Our theme this year is “Leading…, Learning…, Serving…” I learned how important it is to not just think as a team player but to perform as a team player. I also learned that there are teachers and administrators that will not show the same level of commitment and concern about education as I do, but I still have to give 100% and not focus on those only giving 50% to 60%. Competency 005

Competency 006 The principal knows how to implement a staff development system to improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models for supervision and staff development, and apply the legal requirement for personnel management Reflection I was in charge of presenting staff development regarding IEP development. I gave an overview of the reason and proper way to develop IEP’s to the new and veteran teachers. I developed a power point describing the lawful procedure/ method. I learned that stipulations on IEP’s change very often throughout the year. Competency 006

Competency 007 The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem solving skills to ensure an effective learning environment. Reflection I am a member of the APEX leadership committee on campus. I helped coordinate EOC Cram a Jam tutorials. I helped coordinate incentives, food, games, which staff member would attend, flyer to promote the event, and collaborated with the English Department regarding EOC curriculum. I learned that I really do not like working with a group. I learned that rules and regulations should be discussed at the beginning of a group assignment. I learned that there are people that want to be in charge of things, they have great ideas but they do not follow up or follow through even when it is an important event. Competency 007

Competency 008 The ddprincip 0 al knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resources utilization, financial management and technology use. Reflection I was given a budget to oversee. I had to provide food, snacks, and refreshments for EOC tutorials. I could not go over the budget. I was able to feed staff and students, and remain within my budget. I learned that schools are getting more strict about who spends money and why. There is a higher accountability rate than in the past, and more supplies are being monitored. Competency 008

Competency 009 The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management the campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment Reflection I was given the responsibility of building safety. I’ve met with custodial staff to ensure that the proper entrance/exits were locked and unlocked at appropriate times. I checked that teachers kept their doors locked and closed during school hours. I learned that custodians do more than just keep the building clean. Custodians are a part of building security. They also assist in many areas go unnoticed and addressed. Competency 009
