Core Competency # 3 Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments.

Defining Core Competency #3 Social workers are knowledgeable about the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and reasoned discernment. They use critical thinking augmented by creativity and curiosity. Critical thinking also requires the synthesis and communication of relevant information.

Generalist Social Work Practices Using Competency # 3 Gen 3. 1 - Distinguish, appraise, and integrate multiple sources of knowledge, including research-based knowledge, and practice wisdom. Gen 3. 2 -Analyze models of assessment, prevention, Intervention and evaluation. Gen 3. 3 - Demonstrate effective oral and written communication in working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and collegues.

How I am/will use Competency #3 I will be able to communicate with my supervisor when I feel that I am not being treated fairly. When I want to know more about a subject I will take the initiative and begin research on my own. I will look at different ways of interviewing clients. I will consult with my supervisor and my field instructor when I do not fully understand something. When I finally get the opportunity to Interview or talk with clients, I will be clear, precise and very knowledgeable. I will observe different interview techniques/types of various social workers to see which one fits me best.
