Introduction Cardiac catheterization is one of the most valuable invasive cardiovascular diagnostic tests (1). One of the most common and unpleasant complications after Cardiac catheterization is acute urinary retention (2, 3). This study aimed to compare the effect of hot and cold compresses on urinary retention after cardiac catheterization. 2 Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Method This study was a semi-experimental study that examines the effect of hot and cold compresses on acute urinary retention following cardiac catheterization in 132 hospitalized male patients of selected AJA University of medical sciences hospitals. There were three groups; control, hot compresses, and cold compresses. The elimination time of urinary retention and the severity of urinary retention were measured using a visual analog scale before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed by statistical Software of SPSS (version 21). Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Tehran, Iran 3 13/OCT/10
………………………………………………. Result Based on the ANOVA test, there was no significant difference between the severity of urinary retention • … in the cold and hot groups (P = 0. 51). However, the elimination time of urinary retention was significantly lower in the hot compresses group than in the cold compressed group (P = 0. 03). elimination time of urinary retention mean SD severity of urinary retention mean SD group 4 Hot 15 4. 17 Hot 4. 16 1. 57 Cold 17. 23 3. 96 Cold 4. 59 1. 30 Control 18 4. 96 Control 6. 48 1. 54 Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Discussion Although many studies have shown the effect of hot compresses on urinary retention, few studies have been conducted on the effect of cold compresses (4 - 6), The results of a study indicated the effect of cold compression on reducing urinary retention (7). Therefore, further studies are recommended in this area. 5 Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Tehran, Iran 13/OCT/10
Conclusion Regarding the effect of hot compresses on reducing the elimination time of urinary retention, it is recommended to use warm compression on the suprapubic area. 6 Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Tehran, Iran 13/OCT/10

Final Questions • What is already known about the subject? One of the most common and unpleasant complications after Cardiac catheterization is acute urinary retention. These complaints are higher in men. • What could be added to the current knowledge by this study? The use of hot compresses reduces the elimination time of urinary retention 8 Seyedeh Azam Sajadi - Nursing faculty, AJA University of Medical Sciences. Tehran, Iran 13/OCT/10
