Comparing All Branches of US Government In the United States we have three main branches of government. We have local, state, and national governments. In each one we have three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Each one has its own jobs to do. We will learn all about American Government together.

What are taxes? How are they used to help citizens in a community? Taxes are paid to the government from your own paycheck. Every citizen and business is required by law to pay taxes. They help us in many ways in our local communities.
Taxes are paid for many things: Citizens pay taxes on everything they buy in stores, including food. They pay taxes on their homes, cars, land, businesses. Taxes are not fun to pay but the local government needs them to provide each citizen with services.

Separation of Power means that the three branches of government have different powers and different jobs to do. If one branch had too much power, it could run the government alone. This would not be good! This separation is called “checks and balances”. It means that they help keep each other in check and help each other.
