Comparative Study Jose Tinoco Introduction: My comparative study views and examines works of art from different time periods. Many artist had a lot of influence from culture and events that happened to show the impact of that event and the meaning of his piece. Other artist like to manipulate their work using a variety of bright colors. This study views the inspiration from two different artists who are Michelangelo(Renaissance) and Andy Warhol(Pop Art).

Pop Art "I think a painting is more like the real world if it's made out the real world. " "The artist's job is to be a witness to his time in history. " "You begin with the possibilities of the material. " "An empty canvas is full. " "Pop Art is industrial painting. I think the meaning of my work is that it is industrial, it's what all the world will soon become. Europe will be the same way, soon, it won't be American; it will be universal. "

Andy Warhol - Pop Art “ The pop artists did images that anybody walking down Broadway could recognize in a split second — comics, picnic tables, men’s trousers, celebrities, shower curtains, refrigerators, Coke bottles. All the great modern things that the Abstract Expressionists tried not to notice at all. ” “ Pop art is about liking things. ” “Pop is everything art hasn’t been for the last two decades. It’s basically a U-turn back to a representational visual communication, moving at a break-away speed…Pop is a re-enlistment in the world…It is the American Dream, optimistic, generous and naïve. ”

“appropriations examine the look, content, and effect of ‘pop culture, ’ including package design, celebrity watching, and advertising. They also question the values and communication system of ‘high culture’ by juxtaposing it with ‘pop’ mediums…” When I have to think about it, I know the picture is wrong. . . My instinct about painting says, 'If you don't think about it, it's right. ' As soon as you have to decide and choose, it's wrong. And the more you decide about, the more wrong it gets. (Andy Warhol) I wanted to paint nothing. I was looking for something that was the essence of nothing, and the soup can was it. (Andy Warhol)

Religion and the Renaissance “Beyond a doubt truth bears the same relation to falsehood

Religion and the Renaissance “Beyond a doubt truth bears the same relation to falsehood as light to darkness. ” Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else. ” People react to fear, not love - they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true. ” Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else. ” -Virgin of the Rocks (1486) - The Last Supper (1498)

Michaelangelo “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him

Michaelangelo “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short” “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. ” “Death and love are the two wings that bear the good man to heaven”

“The Last Judgement” by Michelangelo (1541) The Last Judgment, another piece by Michelangelo also represents something from the Catholic Church. The painting in the Sistine Chapel represents the Last Judgment of God on humanity. The piece has a lot of detail from those who will suffer for not living their lives correctly and those who did. Marilyn A diptych silkscreen painting of American actress Marilyn Monroe. It was an early example of his silkscreen painting method. While creating the painting each portrait shows a different personality from the actress. Warhol could easily create exactly a portrait in a short period of time. Uses non-representative colors to convey different sensations. Warhol was fascinated with abnormal concepts with the result being beautiful and brilliantly colored portraits of Marilyn Monroe.

“Marilyn” and “The Last Judgement” Both paintings had major recognition as some of the best artworks of all time. The diptych of “Marilyn” by Warhol, is a Pop Art painting that utilizes bright and non-representative colors to depict different emotions. The many and different portraits show that process of silkscreen Warhol used. The Last Judgment, different from the other painting. It shows old style painting and biblical events to demonstrate the meaning of that event. It was painted in the Sistine Chapel. It utilizes people that existed such as Saints and Christ, but also the use of what will happen at some point,

“Marilyn” and “Pieta” Same as with the Last Judgement, these masterpieces are some of the best artworks. The Pieta differentiates from all the other artworks because it is a sculpture. However, it shows as much detail as the other painting. The skill to create it was a lot of hard work to get the texture of the sculpture seen in the folds from the clothes. “Marilyn”, demonstrates the skill of repeating the same portrait using bright colors and depicting different emotions and showing good craftsmanship.

Influence from Warhol What I really liked from his paintings was the colors Warhol used in a lot of them. The idea to use them for different emotions and sensations really makes one think what they mean. Used the same process on my photoshop digital collage by using the same picture in different colors.

Influence from Michelangelo The influence in my art is seen through theme of religion.

Influence from Michelangelo The influence in my art is seen through theme of religion. I want to create a piece that represents an event that is seen in the Catholic Religion. From my dry point artwork and block print, I utlized theme of religion from things like the holy spirit and things that a lot of religious people do which is pray. But take it more into a deep meaning of why that is there.

Process and Connection The simple process of the big theme of Religion is putting that theme with my work and adding things that have been recognized with things that symbolize religion. Like a cross and other things that I see in my religion and have been part of or heard of like praying or when at church they read of the sacred scriptures and become inspired by those words.
