The way that these four artists differ from their brush strokes to their texture and discipline and how all of their work correlates with one another.

Leonardo Da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) Da Vinci was of Italian descent who delved on the idea of grasping more knowledge, mastering numerous amounts of topics and subjects besides his fascination in art. Creating works of arts with the aid of that background knowledge made Da Vinci a creative genius and one of a kind. Nicknamed the “Renaissance man” for his incredible sense of painting during the Renaissance time period proved him being amongst one of the best artists for his precise and accurate brush strokes that gave his art the essence of a photo. Da Vinci was super intricate in detail which was a blessing and a curse due to him starting many works that he never finished or took years to complete. Leonardo Da Vinci 1478

Vincent Van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) Van Gogh was a

Vincent Van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) Van Gogh was a post impressionist painter. Born in the Netherlands in the mid 1850’s, he didn’t make his mark on the world until after his death in the early 1900’s. Covering portraits to landscapes, Van Gogh was a talented artist who reached the level of expertise after creating masterpieces such as Starry Night and Bedroom in Aries. Starting with just sketching as a young child, Van Gogh didn’t start painting until his twenties which within his short lived lifetime, he produced more than 2, 100 artworks. Van Gogh changed all of impressionism entirely based on his consistent but cluttered brush strokes that delivers a vibrant visual due the rapid motion throughout all of his pieces. Roy Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) Lichtenstein was an American pop artist which during the 1960 s, he became a famous contributor towards the upcoming pop art movement creating sensational works of art. The majority of his work resembles that of a comic strip which makes me conclude that he was a kid at heart. Lichtenstein created hard-edged paintings and prints that attracted eyes from all over allowing him to have a huge fan base. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but industrial painting for pop art was a new type of movement that art did not see before which inspired modern art from the twenty first century. Competing with other upcoming pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns allowed Lichtenstein to face a challenge head on always perfecting his craft to stand out. Roy Lichtenstein 1967

Kat Rodriguez (unknown- ) Rodriguez grew up in Wisconsin. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This is where she received the GMF Dorothy and Ruth Smith Scholarship and the Mary E. Van Deven Memorial Scholarship for her paintings. A new and upcoming artist who constantly shares pieces of herself through each of her pieces. She illustrates and draws comics, but she has a series of pieces named migraines created with watercolor paint that explore the visual representation of discomfort and pain that is felt with each of her migraines due to the constant motions and distractions within her pieces. Lady with an Ermine- Leonardo Da Vinci 1489 - swift brush strokes - color

Lady with an Ermine- Leonardo Da Vinci 1489 - swift brush strokes - color balance - proportionate The Lady with the Ermine was painted in oil paints on a wooden panel. At the- time of the painting, oil painting was branching off in Italy for it was a color contrast fairly new medium during that time. The subject has been identified with reasonable certainty as Cecilia Gallerani, who was the mistress of Leonardo's employer, Ludovico Sforza Cecilia Gallerani was a member of a large family that was neither wealthy nor noble. Her father served for a time at the Duke's court. At the time her portrait was painted, she was about 16 years old and was renowned for her beauty, her scholarship, and her poetry. She was betrothed at the approximate age of 10 years to a young nobleman of the house of Visconti, but the marriage was called off. Cecilia became the mistress of the Duke and bore him a son, but he chose to marry a woman from a nobler family, Beatrice d'Este

Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh painted Starry Night in June of 1889, which depicts his view of the outside world while being locked in an asylum that Van Gogh once was in when institutionalized. Arguably one of his finest works, Starry Night’s fluidity brings out our inner child for when we used to dream the world so vast and the ocean's so endless, imagining a perfect world and dreaming past a sky full of stars. A captivating work of art that demonstrates precision in another way. Artist's Intentions Starry Night- Vincent Van Gogh 1889 Both pieces are very detailed in different ways based on their art movement. -Post-Impressionism -Renaissance Able to recognize every piece although Da Vinci mastered painting a person to look so realistic and defined that it resembles a picture. Two very different pieces attempt to provoke two different emotions. Lady with an Ermine shows a powerful woman who gives off confidence but on the other hand, Starry Night evokes joy and wonderment. Vinci uses a plain black background to set the mood of the piece and to put emphasis on the woman. Van Gogh uses bright shades of blue that surrounds and makes the entire essence of the piece vibrant capturing that wonderment as to where he began this work. Both pieces allow your eyes to land on a second object such as the dead tree and the Ermine. Lady with an Ermine- Leonardo Da Vinci 1489

Crying Girl Lichtenstein’s Methods: - light color use precise detail solid brush strokes unrealistic

Crying Girl Lichtenstein’s Methods: - light color use precise detail solid brush strokes unrealistic outlined fluidity Drowning Girl is an oil and synthetic polymer painting made in 1963 by Roy Lichtenstein. Inspired by comic book art, the thought bubble shows what the women is thinking which Roy Lichtenstein is one of few to incorporate literature in his pieces. This piece conveys the idea of disgust as this woman who probably was in a relationship with this Brad character would rather drown than to ask him to come for her aid. The painting is considered among Lichtenstein's most ideal works because the Drowning Girl perfectly depicts the pop art movement and how it was so trendy and colorful and full of that new type of art that just pops out. Roy Lichtenstein shows a recurring theme in this painting of a woman in a tragic situation and also of his other similar painting, Crying Girl.

Migraines- Kat Rodriguez Kat rodriguez is a relatively new artist who captivates audiences with her water color portrayal of migraines which she used to have chronic migraines weekly. These four pieces are all but few of her entire Migraines series which demonstrate rapid brush stroke movement and yet that common variable of fluidity. Like Drowning Girl who turns a bad experience into such a beautiful spectacle. Migraines color use is so bright and vibrant and yet the tree like figures or the mountainous regions are so dark and allows color contrast. This piece was made some time in the twenty first century. All three pieces are titled Migraines. Kat Rodriguez

Two defining characteristics of these pieces is color and contrast. Drowning Girl has a vivid texture and definitive bold colors while Migraines shows more of the blending of hues and uses a very light background to match the essence of the painting. Both demonstrate pain and discomfort based on a bad relationship to internal pain and suffering that migraines give off. Drowning Girl- Roy Lichtenstein Two unique styles that share common themes. Migraines is a conceptual piece that uses various brush strokes to obtain the light and dark of the color. Drowning Girl uses much more solid brush strokes and does not blend any color but gives an outline to each and every object including her face, hair, hand even the waves or current that surrounds her. Migraines- Kat Rodriguez Similarities & Differences

Both pieces consists of multiple circular figures or movements using less geometric shapes which adds to the smoothness of both pieces. Migraines resembles peace and tranquility similar to the cool summer night breeze in the stars even though it visualizes the pain of obsessive headaches that Rodriguez has. Starry Night uses many shades of blue and yellow that formulate the fluidity of the piece while Migraines depends more on an assortment of colors including blue and yellow but also an array of other hues. Migraines color scheme blends well with the tree like figure in the center and allows the piece to resemble abstract art for it resembles an idea but doesn’t formulate into a solid scene like Starry Night. The town, tree, stars, and mountains are all recognizable due to definitive fast brush strokes while Migraines has a really long fluid brush stroke until all of the color translates to the canvas. Drowning Girl & Lady with an Ermine Drowning Girl- Roy Lichtenstein A Renaissance piece

Drowning Girl & Lady with an Ermine Drowning Girl- Roy Lichtenstein A Renaissance piece along side of a Pop art piece delivers another type of aspect that captures two meaningful messages. The woman on the right looks as if she is quite wealthy and would be considered high class. Da Vinci’s distinct blending of hues and detailed brush strokes differ from Lichtenstein’s more abrupt precise brush strokes. The meaning behind the Lady is demonstrating strength and power because money and wealth correlate with power. On the contrast, the woman on the left could be rich or poor which Lichtenstein does not incorporate because at that moment of life and death, your social status does not matter. Lady with an Ermine- Leonardo Da Vinci

Final Analysis Four talented artists who all lived in different time periods created amazing work using common techniques between the firmness of a brush stroke to the contrast from dark to light captivating audiences. Lichtenstein uses a black outline based off of comic books to emphasize the woman’s face and how vast and dangerous the waves are. Da Vinci uses a solid black background to distinguish and highlight the lady holding an ermine which matches the whole tone of the piece because of the darkened areas of the lady’s garments and her serious face looking away. Van Gogh’s tone is more simplistic and joyful due to the movement of the wind and the ocean like flow of the nightly breeze. The different shades of blue that is used shows a perfect contrast with the city below and the tree that acts as the center of the piece. Rodriguez’s Migraines makes audiences wonder about the meaning behind piece because there is no distinct object, landscape or person to grasp our eyes on. Her light brush strokes and hues match that of the other pieces based on the precision and discipline to formulate those orbs and tree like ideas.
