COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS IN CASE MANAGEMENT Celebrating Volunteers and their Stories
A chance to share volunteers’ stories with the global Child Protection community! • Volunteers make a difference in children’s lives everyday. • The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action invites volunteers to share their stories about supporting children within case management. This could be a good way of motivating and celebrating the volunteers who work in your program. • We will use the stories that are shared to help us develop guidance and training and … the top submissions will appear on the Alliance website and Facebook page!
Photos are a good way of telling a story! Invite the volunteers to tell the story of their work through 1 -3 photographs, each with a small written story.
An Example from Hamdo Kadish, a volunteer working in Syria “This photo tells you about my work. I helped the family to take the six-year old boy to a service centre for children with disabilities. They provided him with a wheelchair. Now he can move around. He was carried by his brother before. Hamdo didn’t show any faces in the photo or mention any names in the story – he kept the confidentiality of the family. Seeing the smile on his and his parents' faces was priceless and drives me to work harder and secure the needs of many children, especially those with special needs. Sometimes volunteers like myself are a child's last hope. This child could've been one of my own. ”
We want the stories from volunteers to tell us about their work and lives, not so much about individual cases. The volunteers can decide what photos to take but these questions may help them to think about their stories: • Why did you become a volunteer? • What do YOU do in your day? • What makes YOU proud about your work? • What makes YOU sad about your work? • Who supports you in your work? • How do you support each other as volunteers?
Remind volunteers about safety Please remember, you MUST keep yourself and the child and family you work with safe! You MUST also keep confidentiality. • Don’t take a photo if it is not safe for you or the people you work with. • Ask permission before you take a photo - tell them why you are taking the photo – to tell other people about the work you do. • Don’t show faces – be creative – tell your story without identifying anyone, e. g. show hands, feet or objects that tell a story. • For anyone in the photo, show them the picture you have taken and ask if it is okay to share.
This is Hamdo Kadish who told us the story how happy he felt helping the boy who needed a wheelchair. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS What to submit: 1.
