Best Practices: Active Community Organization Public Health Approach to Mosquito Source Reduction Members of the community are approached by trained peer-volunteers who provide: • Verbal information about public health threats regarding mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases • Active demonstrations of ways to minimize the occurrence of periodomestic mosquitoes
Evidence-Based Practice • Community members in Indonesia provided education to 500 homes. After 3 months there was a 56% reduction in larval indices (Soedarmo 1993). • Community volunteers in Thailand were trained in mosquito control. Their community education resulted in a significant reduction in mosquito infestations (Phanthumachinda, et al. 1995). • In Texas, high school students proved to be an excellent resource for teaching members of the community about health behaviors (Warner, et al. 2005). • In New Jersey, active education by community peers led to a significant reduction in mosquito container habitats (Healy, et al. 2014).
“Rather than creating additional external structures, interventions at local level should be inserted in the pre-existing social structures, organizations and institutions” -Pérez, et al. , 2007 “Community participation in Aedes aegypti control: a sociological perspective on five years of research in the health area ‘‘ 26 de Julio’’, Havana, Cuba
Key Partners in Community Engagement • • • Local residents/citizen scientists Community leaders Community health workers/promotoras Ameri. Corps volunteers (Healy, et al. 2014) High school students Medical Reserve Corps Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Religious groups Community service organization chapters Agricultural extension programs
Case Study Results: Significant reduction in container habitats in the sites where the volunteers actively engaged the community compared to untreated control areas.
Volunteer Training • Mosquito biology • Basic skills training: source reduction of containers • Practice with “backyard scenarios” • Role play in simulated backyard habitats • How to promote and encourage backyard source reduction
Points of Community Engagement • Door to door outreach campaigns – Walk around yard with residents – Provide verbal and written information • Community workshops • Tabling at community events – Tire pick-up days – Trash can drilling days • Social media posts • Media releases
