Community Language Learning • This method was developed by Charles A. Curran in the 1960 s. • Also called counselling-learning theory. • It’s about helping student to overcome their fears by becoming a counsellor
Principles of CLL • Teacher introduces himself and the lesson is presented in their native language. • Students ask questions in their native language but teacher answers in the target language. • Mistakes will be corrected by repeating. • It encouraged cooperation • Advanced students may serve as counsellors to beginners. • Textbook is not considered a necessary component
CLL combines innovative learning tasks and activities with conventional ones. They include: 1. Translation The teachers translate what the students try to say and the students repeat it. 2. Group Work Students work with groups and complete a task that will be presented to teacher and the rest of the class.
3. Recording Students record conversation in the target language. 4. Transcription Students transcribe conversations they have recorded. 5. Analysis Students analyse transcriptions of target language in order to use them.
6. Listening Students listen to the teacher and then they involve elements they might have elicited. 7. Free Conversation The students are ready to speak with the teacher or other students.
Advantages • Lower students anxiety. • Warm and sympathetic relationship T-S • Students become independent.
Disadvantages • Teacher has to be highly proficient in L 1 and L 2 • Time consuming to carry out
Teachers’ Role • Is initially likened to that of a nurturing parent. • Operates in a supportive role. • Monitors learner utterances, providing assistance when requested.
Students’ Role • Listen to the teacher attentively. • Become counsellors of other learners • Repeat target utterances without hesitation.
