MAIN FEATURES Teacher(called ‘the knower’) remains outside the circle of learners. Ø Mother Tongue( MT) is used to explain or translate to make the learners comfortable. Ø Community feeling is fostered to build up trust, and to reduce the level of stress for the learners. Ø Learning initiative must be with the learners. Ø Use of authentic materials for learning. Ø

CLL PROCEDURES � The basic procedures of CLL can be derived from the Counselor- Client relationship. � A group of learners sit in a circle with the teacher standing outside the circle; a student whispers a message in the native language (L 1) ; the teacher translates it into the foreign language (L 2) ; the student repeats the message in the foreign language into a cassette ; students compose further messages in the foreign language with the teacher’s help ; students reflect about their feelings.

� CLL techniques belong to a larger set of foreign language teaching practices sometimes described as Humanistic Techniques ( MOSAKOWITZ 1978 ). Mosakowitz defines Humanistic techniques as THOSE that blend what the student feels, thinks and knows with what he is LEARNING in the target language.

� Another language teaching tradition with which CLL is linked is certain kinds of bilingual educational programs by MACKEY ( 1972 ) as “LANGUAGE ALTERNATION “ – (a message/ lesson is presented first in the native tongue and then in the second language.

B. Theory Of Learning CLL advocates a holistic approach to language learning. this is termed as “whole person learning. ” this process is divided into five stages and compared to the onto genetic development of the child. 1. Birth stage. 2. Independent stage. 3. Learner as secure enough to take criticism. 4. Improving style and knowledge. 5. Learner as adult.

Types of learning and teaching activities CLL combines innovative learning tasks and conventional activities 1. Translation. 2. Group work. 3. Recording. 4. Transcription. 5. Analysis. 6. Reflection and observation. 7. Listening. 8. Free conversation.

Learner Roles CLL learners are typically grouped in a circle of 6 -12 learners, with the number of knowers varying from one per group to one per student Teacher roles Teachers role is similar to that of a nurturing parent. The teacher is responsible for providing a safe environment in which clients can learn and grow.
