COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTS 20 NOVEMBER 2020
COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTS – FORMAL DEFINITION Community land trusts (CLTs) are set up and run by ordinary people to develop and manage homes as well as other assets important to that community, like community enterprises, food growing or workspaces. CLTs act as long-term stewards of housing, ensuring that it remains genuinely affordable, based on what people earn in their area, not just for now but for every future occupier.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A COMMUNITY LAND TRUST? • • • Can choose the members of the group i. e. not necessarily the Parish Council People recognise its local people doing something for local people Not for profit Not a rural exception site – private too What people really want to know is that new homes are going to local people Changes the nomination rights from district to CLT criteria Greater sense of community acceptance from the start and no ‘them and us’ Long-term community role in ownership, stewardship or management Benefits legally protected in perpetuity
