Session Objectives By the end of the session, participants will 1. Practice using community mapping to analyze and assess aspects of literacy in a community ; brainstorm best entry points for engaging community members. 2. Describe at least three PACA tools applicable to literacy in a community setting. 3. Give at least two concrete examples of how to use community mapping to identify potential community engagement groups, settings, and approaches.

What is meant by Community Engagement in Literacy? § All the ways in which community members support literacy development and school success of children
Why is community engagement important? § Support or promotion of literacy skills, reading, and the use of print out of schools will aid children in school § Enhances the development of vocabulary, background knowledge, school language, pre-reading, and pre-writing skills
Why is community engagement important? § Opportunities to practice using newly developed literacy skills in real-life settings § Why else?
Why a community map? § Locates activity centers, institutions, and other areas frequented by community groups § Identifies where there may be openings to enhance the literate environment by introducing the written or spoken word § Helps to identify differences in perception, needs, access to resources, and uses of community resources by men, women, children, age, ethnic groups, or those in different social categories
A community map for literacy can help us … § Identify what kinds of literacy practices exist in a community that support learning for children and others § Identify who is participating in the literacy events and practices § Determine who may be left out that could potentially benefit § What else?
