What is the Industrial Strategy? The government’s ambitious, modern Industrial Strategy sets out a long term plan to boost the productivity and earning power of people throughout the UK. Ø It sets out how we are building a Britain fit for the future – how we will help businesses create better, higher-paying jobs in every part of the United Kingdom with investment in the skills, industries and infrastructure of the future. Ø The UK has significant economic strengths on which we can build, but we need to do more to increase our productivity and make the most of our untapped potential right across the country. Ø By planning for a rapidly changing future, we can shape new markets and build the UK's competitive advantage as well as improve the quality of our everyday lives. Ø We will boost productivity and earning power across the country by focusing on the five foundations of productivity: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Business Environment and Places. What’s in it for the East of England? Some of the key highlights in the Industrial White Paper related to the East are below. • Digital businesses in Cambridge will receive a boost as the city becomes home to a Tech Nation Hub. Tech Nation will work with local partners to establish regional business support programs, mentoring and networking, and link the local tech sector into a UK wide network of hubs. • Transport users in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority will receive £ 74 million from a new Transforming Cities Fund. This will be invested in transport projects which drive productivity by improving connectivity, reducing congestion and introducing new mobility services and technology. • A further £ 840 million from this fund will be allocated via competition to other cities, such as Norwich and Ipswich. • Those going into technical education in the East of England will benefit from up to £ 20 m being invested nation-wide into the FE teaching profession to prepare for T Levels. • The Government has set an ambitious vision for the Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford Corridor, as part of our vision to strengthen the prosperity of the East of England. 6
