Miscommunication • Miscommunication is the failure to communicate ideas or intentions successfully • The purpose of communication is to convey information from one person to another. • Through the choice of written and spoken words, ideas, concepts, emotions, thoughts, and opinions are exchanged. Unfortunately, miscommunication is common – the listener or reader fails to understand what is said or written. • Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Make Friends and Influence People, ” said, “ 90 percent of all management problems are caused by miscommunication. ”
• When you consider the tensions between men and women, young and old, friends, and family members, it seems that most people are guilty of poor communication. • But it’s possible to develop effective communication skills by learning how to speak and write simply and clearly, using plain language that’s easily understood by most people.
Example • “If you have time, try to mow the lawn this afternoon, ” said the father as he walked out the door to go to his office. His teenage son, head down, concentrating on breakfast, grunts in reply, “Uh-huh. ” • To the father’s dismay, the yard remained untouched when he returned home. The son, when confronted by his angry father, excused his lack of action with the explanation, “You said ‘if I had time, ’ and I was at the mall day. ”
Effective Communication • • Be Brief Manners Using “I” Be Positive Good listener Spice up your words Clarity Pronunciation
Effective Communication Example • Communications are effective when the recipient of a thought, whether by listening or reading, understands the meaning intended by the speaker or writer. Good communication is simple and direct, sometimes intensified by emotion, but never confusing. • For example, when asking his son to mow the lawn, the father from the previous scenario would have been more successful if he had taken the time to make sure his son was listening, and had chosen his words more carefully: • “Mike, ” said the father addressing his son as he walked out the door to work. The father paused, waiting for the teenager to raise his eyes from the cereal he was gulping down. “We are going out of town this weekend, so you need to mow the lawn today. Any problem with that? ”
Example • “No, sir. I was going to the mall with Ted and Jim, but I can get it done before I leave. ” • “Great. I appreciate it. See you tonight, ” said the father, heading out the door. The lawn was mowed and edged, and the family had a non-eventful evening.

It demands the ability to clearly construct, present and critically analyze arguments. • Legal communication is a context-driven body of theory that explains how legal practitioners use communication to achieve goals in legal forums. These theories both inform and are informed by legal and communication practices.

Positive Impact of Technology • Organizations use electronic communication in day-to-day operations, and individuals use it for personal tasks, like banking, paying bills and socializing. • Communication technology has also made long-distance communication and mass communication easy and convenient. • Social Influence • Communication technology, especially Internet communication like social networking websites and dating websites, has simplified the process of socializing. Social networking websites enable you to easily keep in touch with friends and family, whereas dating websites help you find someone compatible to be in a relationship with.
• Mass communication : is communicating to a large number of people. Schools and businesses are two types of organizations which use electronic communication, like email and e-newsletters, to communicate to a large number of people. • Long-Distance Communication: The advancement of communication technology has helped to make long-distance communication fast and seemingly effortless. • Communication for the Disabled: A benefit of communication technology not often talked about is the technology's ability to give disabled people the ability to communicate. Communication technology, like electronic communication boards and specialized computer software, helps to give a voice to individuals who've previously gone unheard.
Negative Impact of Technology • Quality suffers: The magic word these days is multitasking. The internet truly enables people at home or at work to talk with someone over the phone or through any communications systems available while doing something else at the same time • Virtual rather than personal: The availability of communication devices has also resulted to a shift in interpersonal relationships. Communication these days have become virtual rather than personal. You may be video calling with someone over your smart phone but little did you realize that you may have established a far deeper relationship with your phone rather than with the person on the other end of the line. • Informal Communication: Traditional written correspondence such as letters via postal mail is usually more professional in format and tone. Email and texting have reduced the standard level of professionalism in some instances. This can become a problem.
• Weakens Family Relations: Many teenagers are always hooked to the social networking sites. They are closer to online friends, but the gap between parents and kids has increased considerably • Negative Impact of Technology on Interpersonal Communication: The current generation lacks essential interpersonal skills. A major reason for this is the increased frequency of communication through texting and chatting on websites. This has an effect on nonverbal communication as well. Technological means have also affected nonverbal communication. Lack of face-to-face interaction has reduced the nonverbal grasping power of individuals.
