Communication, Language and Literacy Understanding of the world This term the children will be listening and responding to fiction and non-fiction books about hot and cold countries, where food comes from and growing plants. The children will be continuing using capital letters (Year 1 for people, places and days of the week as well as at the beginning of a sentence) and full stops correctly (Year one question marks and exclamation marks and beginning to use speech marks) and describing words in their writing. In phonics the children will be continuing with learning to recognise vowel phonemes and consonant clusters to blend sounds to help them read and spell through the Read Write Inc. phonics program. Please do support your child at home by practicing key words, sounds and reading books, if you can-5 to 10 minutes a night will make a huge difference to them. The focus for this term is to identify hot and cold countries on a globe and from Atlas’. The Year one children will be learning to name the 7 continents of the world and it’s 5 oceans! By finding the equator they will choose countries to find out about which are hot and cold. We hope to build an igloo so please keep saving your 4 pint milk bottles for us! In science the children are learning to name common wild and garden plants and trees and identify their structure, including trunk, stem, roots, seeds…We will be planting in our wildlife area and continuing weaving the fence (any parent help with this project or donations of soft wood branches, bulbs, seeds and cutting would be much appreciated). We will be growing our own food from seeds. The children will be planning, observing and recording their own investigations into how plants grow. The children will be using animation and green screen to produce short films. Creative Development: The children will be exploring printing and making miniature gardens from a range of media. We will be painting and drawing plants and flowers and looking at famous artists work through the Katie and the Impressionist stories. The children will sing songs from memory and make up their own symbols to record their simple compositions using percussion instruments for the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and “Hello Mr Sun”. Physical development: The children will be responding to stories and poems through dance and movement. They will be playing team games and running games with the Lincoln City Football Coach. The children will be manipulating malleable materials to shape and using tools to plant. PE lessons are usually on Mon and Wed but please do ensure PE kits are in school every day. Mrs Peacock Fir Tree Class Spring Term 2015 Our World Personal, Social, Emotional Development We are learning what it is like to be part of a Jewish Community and as part of this we will be visiting a synagogue. The children will be learning how to resolve conflicts peacefully through social stories and real events. Mathematical development The children will be programming toys and using quarter, half and three-quarter turns. They will be identifying and continuing number and shape sequences. The children will be solving problems involving sharing and multiplication using pictures and arrays, the foundation stage by counting objects. They will be comparing plants height, weight and measuring water to feed them. They will be learning to tell the time o’clock and half past and identify which plants grow quicker, slower…
