Communication in Science n Lego Activity ¨ (Ms. Tinucci will give you partners) ¨ Partner n A (Architect) Materials person – pick up materials ¨ Partner B (Builder)

Communication Activity n Partner A pick up materials (2 numbered baggies with Lego’s) find your partner n Sit back-to-back in your chairs with your Lego bags in your lap n You may NOT turn around or look at your partner or their work at any time!

Communication Activity n Partner A – you are the architect, it is your job to create a Lego structure using at least 5 of your Lego pieces – do this now ¨ Once your structure is created, you may NOT change your design ¨ Do NOT look at your partner or their work, do not talk! n Partner B – you are the builder, wait for further instructions ¨ Do NOT look at your partner or their work, do not talk!

Communication Activity n Architect – now that you have completed your structure, direct your partner on how to assemble an identical object (color does not matter, but size/shape of pieces DOES) ¨ Do n NOT look at your partner or their work! Builder – listen and follow directions in order to assemble the structure, ask questions when needed ¨ Do NOT look at your partner or their work!

Communication Activity n Architect – now that you have completed your structure, direct your partner on how to assemble an identical object (color does not matter but size/shape of pieces DOES) ¨ Do n NOT look at your partner or their work! Builder – listen and follow directions in order to assemble the structure – you may NOT talk OR ask questions – just listen carefully ¨ Do NOT look at your partner or their work!

Communication Activity n If time allows: once you have completed one structure, take apart your work and switch jobs Builder becomes Architect and vs. n Materials person - Return all materials to the baggies, and baggies to Ms. Tinucci.

Did you feel more comfortable as the Architect or the Builder? Architects – what was hard about your job? Builders – what was difficult about being the builder? Builders – I appreciated it when my architect…. Architects – were you surprised by what was built? What does this tell you about communication in science? What are some difficulties to communicating with the Worlds scientific community? What should we do as scientists in order to better communicate our lab procedures to others?
