Common Core State Standards (CCSS) An overview… The purpose of the CCSS… To define the English language arts, literacy, and mathematical skills and knowledge students in grades K-12 should achieve in order to graduate from high school ready to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and workforce training programs. Criteria for development • Fewer, clearer, higher • Aligned with college and work expectations • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge • Build on strengths of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards • Realistic and practical for the classroom Benefit for students and families A focus on college and careers that is consistent regardless of zip code 2
