Committees in congress �Standing committee- Permanent panel that considers bills Committee assignments- # of Committees has varied over the years. � Currently 19 in House � Currently 17 in the Senate Introduced Bills can go into the Senate and the House at the same time. � Ex. Taxes- House (Ways and Means Committee) Senate (Finance Committee)
Committees in Congress �Chairmen of the Committee- Chosen according to Seniority Elected by floor vote at the beginning of Congress. Majority Party usually holds majority of positions �Subcommittees- over 150 with in the Standing Committee.
�House Rules Committee- “Traffic Cop”- screens, slows, speeds up, and prevents different bills. Most bills die in committees. If the bill makes it to the floor it is because the House Rules Committee allowed it.
�Select or Special Committees- investigate current matter, hold investigations �(ex. Domestic terrorism. )
�Joint and Conference Committee- members of both houses that join together to iron out differences in bills- Produce a compromise.
Lobbyist �Influence legislation on behalf of a special interest group or corporation. �Examples: National Rifle Association, American Civil Liberties Union, National Right to Life Committee
