Elimination of the EPE § Elimination of the EPE – ENGL 001: English Proficiency Exam (EPE) is a zero-credit assessment that was implemented in 1998 to make certain that students who completed at UMES or transferred into UMES the single composition course were proficient in writing. We want to eliminate it as an assessment course that is also a graduation requirement effective immediately for both current and future UMES students because it is no longer necessary. We propose replacing it with a process-based writing assessment that is already a part of our ENGL 102: Principles of Composition II course-- the research argumentation essay. This essay will not only count as an assignment in the course but also as a General Education assessment of writing proficiency. It will be a component of the ENGL 102 course, but it will not have a separate listing in Hawk. Web or be a graduation requirement. 2
