Streamlining CEOS activities on SDGs Cardinal Requirements 1. The CEOS activities on SDGs must focus on the unique role that CEOS should play as a coordination body of the Space Agencies. 2. The CEOS activities on SDGs must serve the interest of CEOS and offer tangible benefits to all CEOS Agencies. 3. The permanent CEOS entities (WGs, VCs, SEO) must be involved in order to leverage CEOS expertise and maximize overall benefits. 4. The CEOS activities on SDGs must complement rather than duplicate the GEO community efforts on SDGs (GEO EO 4 SDG initiative). 5. The CEOS activities on SDGs must be connected to the SDG processes in place in the UN (e. g. IAEG-SDGs WGGI and UN Custodian Agencies). 6. The CEOS activities on SDGs and deliverables must be embedded in the GEO Federated Approach on SDGs and related workflows. 7. The CEOS activities on SDGs and deliverables must be commensurate with the resources available in CEOS to deliver as planned. Streamlining CEOS activities on SDGs Primary SDG Indicators Starting with 3 SDG Indicators : ▪ 6. 6. 1 (water-related ecosystems) ▪ 11. 3. 1 (sustainable urbanization) ▪ 15. 3. 1 (land degradation neutrality) Selected by SDG-AHT because: ▪ need to focus on a limited number of SDG indicators. “Start small, Think big” ▪ selected by UN IAEG-SDGs WGGI as primary indicators for EO uptake. “Use SDG channels to maximise Impact” ▪ EO recognised as data sources by UN custodian Agencies in the indicator monitoring guidelines. “Build on proven EO technologies” Initiate work on other SDG indicators when it matches CEOS Agencies’ interests ▪ GEO Blue Planet/NOAA for Indicator 14. 1. 1 on coastal pollution ▪ GEOGLAM/NASA for Indicator 2. 4. 1 on sustainable agriculture SIT-35, 25 -26 March 2020 Join at www. slido. com with the event code: #ceos-sit-35 3
GEO SDG EO Toolkits a Federated Approach on SDGs 6. The CEOS activities on SDGs and deliverables will be embedded in the GEO Federated Approach on SDGs and related workflows GEO SDG EO Toolkits • • • Customizable, continually updated. • • Organized by SDG theme / target/ indicator. • Leverage existing & planned systems (GEOSS Portal, GEO Knowledge Hub) • Link to relevant EO data repositories & data processing/analytics platforms. • In partnership with GEO thematic initiatives and SDG Custodian Agencies. Consultative process with countries. Practical guidance, to complement guidance by SDG custodian agencies. Facilitate knowledge sharing across all SDG stakeholders. Proof of Concept trial on SDG 11 with UN Habitat and GEO urban initiatives (HPI and GUOI) SIT-35, 25 -26 March 2020 Join at www. slido. com with the event code: #ceos-sit-35 4
