WGCap. D Indigenous Trainings Engage with indigenous peoples in one or more workshops to build their capacity in the use of Earth observation information for their community needs, and share the learning gained from these national programs to improve methods for engagement with indigenous people internationally through collaboration with CEOS partners. Canada • Collaborators: CSA, NASA, Indigenous Services Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Firelight group (Indigenous Mapping Network) • Data/Tools: SAR, Landsat, MODIS, Google Earth Australia • Collaborators: Geoscience Australia, NASA • Data/Tools: SAR, Landsat, MODIS, Google Earth WGCap. Learning from challenges • Challenges in working with indigenous peoples: o Often in remote areas with limited/no bandwidth o Sometimes contentious relationships with government o Language barriers – some use traditional language not well known by others o Lack of resources • Overcoming challenges o Mobile apps that do not require internet (Digital Democracy’s Mapeo) o Participatory Mapping approaches o Use of drones for data collection o Projects led by indigenous people for indigenous communities WGCap. D-9 Annual Meeting March 10 -12, 2020 4
Key Takeaways and Lessons Learned • • • Trust is key Free, Informed and Prior Consent Data privacy is an important issue (sacred sites, ceremonial areas, etc…) Working with regional Indigenous organizations is extremely beneficial Design trainings around needs, capabilities, traditions Need to involve others in the communities (elders, youth, etc. . ) WGCap. D-9 Annual Meeting March 10 -12, 2020 5
Opportunities for WGCap. D • • • Provide multiple ways to access and utilize data – both online and offline Use platforms and interfaces like Google Earth or Story Map to allow different types of information to be recorded (traditional language and symbols) Co-design trainings with regional Indigenous organizations and/or organizations that already have established relationships with Indigenous peoples (Indigenous Services Canada, Geoscience Australia) WGCap.
