October 16, 2010 San Francisco, CA The following actions were voted on and approved by CAST: � Not to participate in the NASS matching program. � Increase the committee membership from 5 to 7. � Liaisons (e. g. chairman of a section) are invited to CAST meetings on a rotating schedule, depending on the agenda and items considered.
Actions approved by CAST committee on Oct. 16, 2010 S. F. , but awaiting approval by Council and general membership : � Establish a General Neurosurgery Fellowship for: � Neurosurgeons who have been away from practice and wants to reenter profession. � Resident training supplement (weak chief? ) � Foreign graduates � Failed boards � Fellowship application process will begin 1½ years before the start of the fellowship (primarily to compete with the NASS match program). � Approved combined (ortho and neurosurgery) fellowship program if it has an ACGME approved neurosurgical and orthopedic program, and if the Director or Co-Director is a neurosurgeon.
New Programs Approved: Approved three new programs : Stanford Utah Mayo - Stereotactic/Functional Spine Peripheral nerve
Other topics of discussion: � Spine Section is in the process of updating program requirements for spine fellowship (MISS, new instrumentation, new techniques, arthroplasty, etc). � NREF fellowship: Ideally this fellowship money is only awarded to a CAST approved fellowship.
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL INTERIM MEETING DECEMBER 4, 2010 NEW YORK, NY
The following items were approved by the Council: � Two additional members for CAST Committee. � Request to start fellowship application process 1½ years prior to the start of the fellowship.
Proposal to take applications 1½ years ahead NASS currently: � Interviews: January 2 – April 30, 2012 � Rank list submitted: May 5, 2012 � Match results: May 12, 2012 � Fellowship begins: July 1, 2013 CAST timeline for fellowship application: � Applications due to programs: January – March 31, 2012 � Program notifies candidates no later than April 30, 2012 � Fellowship begins July 2013 � (Chief Residents have obtained their Fellowship and are not on the interview trail)
Items tabled: The Neurosurgery General Fellowship: The council decided to table this proposal and discuss this idea with the ABNS and RRC prior to the 12/ 2011 meeting. The General Neurosurgery Fellowship proposal has been sent to the Neurosurgery RRC and ABNS for their input.
